As soon as we got into Las Vegas we checked-in at our hotels and then headed straight for the SEMA show. We got there just in time to pick up our media badges and stop by the Scion booth before the end of the show.

We were able to see these builds at the Scion SEMA media preview party, but finally seeing them on display meant that we were very close to hearing the winner of this whole thing.

SEMA 2012 – FR-Steria

“There is no doubt that the Scion FR-S is going to be the dominant and prominent cars [sic] at SEMA this year, and I’ll go out on a limb and say the same will happen again at the 2013 SEMA Show.”

– Neil Tjin
President at Tjin Edition
(Sept. 25, 2012)

Neil could not have been more right in his prediction. The SEMA show is always a really, really, really big show. To put things into context, the SEMA show brings all parts of the auto industry, domestic and international; buyers and exhibitors; styling and performance to tools and accessories, anything you can think of it’s probably there; and then some! Now spread that out through the entire Las Vegas Convention Center, which consists of 3 halls, with one having a second floor, and then the entire outside parking lot. Yup, it’s big.

There’s no surprise on why the Scion FR-S was awarded the hottest sports compact vehicle this year. With a show that big you’d be sure to see all sorts of vehicles, well this year you still could have, but there was not a single area of the convention center that you couldn’t take a few steps and spot a Scion FR-S (or Subaru BRZ). It was almost maddening, maybe even giving some a sense of hysteria!

But all is good, let’s take a look at some of the different FR-S builds at the show. And a few other stand outs.

Dakota Digital Hits it Big in Las Vegas

In our SEMA coverage we snapped a few shots of Dakota Digital’s hybrid gauges. Although they are not Scion related they were pretty cool and any automotive enthusiasts  would appreciate to be exposed to what is available. Dave and I personally have Dakota Digital gauges in our Scions.  They also have an electronic air management system that is pretty cool.

Pre-SEMA Scion Art Gallery

Events

For the past few years’ Scion has put on a pre-SEMA show that displayed their SEMA projects in a gallery type setting. In Culver City, a city west of LA, a warehouse style building with an art deco feel was the home of the Scion party. Hors d’œuvre and drinks made its round as our very own Edwin was able to catch some of the main attraction. A few builders and companies were on hand such as president Kenji Sumion from GReddy along with Jack Hollis, Scion’s vice-president. We spoke with Mr. Sumion for their inspiration on GReddy’s T67 powered tC and he said ,” the concept was to build the ultimate street car.” Check out the pictures and you can see why.

We have always been a big fan of The Tjin Brother’s creations, from their stable of once red to bright blue tC, dual-tone brown xB’s, Ralph Lauren xB, dual-tone 240, grey Volvo, and a list of others. I can’t type out their impressive resume but a simple Google search will easily give you a synopsis of what they do. You will find that these guys push the envelope in terms of design, trends, and style. They were one of, if not the first to dismantle a set of HRE’s to color-match the lips. Who does that to those? They DO! With massive low offsets on their cars, especially the ER34 Skyline, chocolate brown xB’s, and blue tC, they were wide and slammed before Hella and Flush were a term. Among the aggressive stance they have incorporated amazing technology and techniques into their builds such as air-jacks, full custom roll cages, raised shock towers,  gold and silver leafing, and many other unique touches that blend form, function, and styling from different eras. Styling, that no one dared to even try on modern day import vehicles.
